SYMPTOMS

When you try to import a Quicken Interchange Format (QIF) file that enables you to categorize transactions from your financial institution's Web site into Money 2000 and later, the category information is not imported successfully.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Money 2000 and later does not import the category information that is contained in QIF files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, import the QIF file into Money, and then categorize the transactions within Money, instead of attempting to categorize the transactions from your financial institution's Web site.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft recommends that you use the method in the "Resolution" section of this article to make sure that you do not create duplicate transactions.

However, if you want to continue categorizing transactions from your financial institution's Web site, you can work around this issue by manually importing the QIF file into Money. To do this, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Change the QIF File Association for Microsoft Internet Explorer

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. On the View or the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab.
  4. In the Registered file types box, click Quicken Import File, and then click Edit.
  5. Click to select the Confirm open after download check box, and then click OK.
  6. Quit Windows Explorer.

Import the QIF File into Money 2000 or Later

When you download the QIF file, you are prompted to open the file or save the file to disk. Choose the option to save the file to disk.

After you download the QIF file, import the file into Money from its current location, and then follow these steps to import the statement information into Money 2000.

Note When you import a QIF file, Money may create duplicate transactions in the account into which you import the QIF file. For information about how to remove duplicate transactions, please see the "Find out the issues related to .QIF import files" topic in Money online Help.

To import the QIF file into Money 2000 or later:
  1. On the File menu in Money, click Import.
  2. Select the QIF file that you downloaded from your financial institution, and then click Import.
  3. Click As a new or recovered account, and then click OK.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish importing the QIF file.
