OL2000: You Receive an Error Message When You Add a Comment to an HTML E-mail Message (257201)

SYMPTOMS

When you forward or reply to an e-mail message that is in HTML format, and then attempt to comment the original body of the message, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Outlook caused an invalid page fault in module Mso9.dll at 015f:308c60bb.

-or-

The instruction at "0x308c5f2b" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

-or-

Outlook.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
NOTE: The memory address in the error message may be different for your computer.

If you use Microsoft Windows 2000, Outlook may quit, and you may not receive an error message. If you use Microsoft Windows NT 4, you may receive a Dr. Watson error message.

CAUSE

You may receive this error message if you click to select the Mark my comments with check box, and then leave the Mark my comments with text box blank.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must follow the procedures in this section:
  • Type at least one character of text in the Mark my comments with text box.
  • Click to clear the Mark my comments with check box.
  • Change the message format to Microsoft Outlook Rich Text.

Type a Character in the "Mark my comments with" Check Box

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options.
  3. Click to select the Mark my comments with check box, and then type some text in the Mark my comments with text box.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK again to save your changes.

Click to Clear the "Mark my comments with" Check Box

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options.
  3. Click to clear the Mark my comments with check box.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK again to save your changes.

Change the Message Format to Outlook Rich Text

  1. Open the HTML message, and then click Reply.
  2. On the Format menu, click Plain Text.
  3. When you receive the following warning message, click Yes:

    Warning: Changing the formatting of this message from HTML to plain text requires removing all the current formatting, including any pictures you may have included. Are you sure you want to do this?

  4. On the Format menu, click Rich Text.
You can now change the text in the original message body without receiving an error message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
