SYMPTOMS

When you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and you type a keyword into a text input box in order to search an index, you may be unable to use the arrow keys to move the cursor in the input box.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the Web page contains a <ISINDEX> tag that is configured to use a style setting "writing-mode:tb-rl".

This is an example of the ISINDEX tag:
<ISINDEX STYLE="writing-mode:tb-rl">
				

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the mouse to move the cursor, or use the END, HOME, and BACKSPACE keys to move around in the input box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
