This article was previously published under Q257033 SYMPTOMS
When you use Internet Explorer to view a file, and you change the programmatic identifier (ProgID) in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) source, and then you save the changes and click Refresh, the Edit button may not reflect the new ProgID.
For example, if you use Internet Explorer to open a file that was created in Microsoft Word, the Edit button displays a Microsoft Word logo. If you change the ProgID in the meta tag of the HTML source file from Word.Document to Excel.Sheet and then click Refresh, the Microsoft Word logo still appears, instead of the Microsoft Excel logo. If you click Edit, the file opens in Microsoft Word, instead of in Microsoft Excel.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, browse away from the file, and then return to the file in Internet Explorer.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
A ProgID is an identifier in the form OLEServerName.ObjectName (for example, Excel.Sheet or PowerPoint.Slide) that is used by the Windows registry to uniquely identify an object.
