IP Address Assignment for NLB with Multiple Network Adapters (256910)

The following criteria must be true before you follow the steps in this article:

• A computer that runs Windows 2000 Advanced Server with NLB is installed on the network adapter that is connected to the Internet.
• The virtual (cluster) IP address is 10.0.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 .
• The internal address is 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

To configure the IP addresses on the internal network adapter:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
2. Right-click the internal network adapter, and then click Properties.
3. Make sure that the Network Load Balancing check box is not selected.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
5. Click Use the following IP address, and then type the IP address for the internal adapter.
6. Click OK, and then click OK.

To configure the IP addresses on the external network adapter:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
2. Right-click the external network adapter, and then click Properties.
3. Make sure that the Network Load Balancing check box is selected.
4. Click Network Load Balancing, and then click Properties.
5. On the Cluster tab, type the virtual IP address in the Primary IP Address box, and then add the appropriate subnet mask. You do not need to type the IP address of the internal network adapter in the Dedicated IP Address box on the Host Parameters tab.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
8. Click Use the following IP address, and then type the virtual IP address.
9. Click OK, and then click OK.

The server is now configured to accept connections to the virtual address and load balances with other servers if they are configured similarly.

NOTE: The dedicated IP address must be unique between all NLB cluster members. The virtual address is the same.
