PRJ2000: Cannot Create External Link to a Project Stored in a Web Folder (256657)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000

This article was previously published under Q256657

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 2000, when you try to edit the Predecessors or Successors field to add a link to an external project, you may receive the following error message:
There was a problem creating the link.

You cannot create links to projects that are stored on a Web server, and you cannot insert projects from a Web server.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you insert an external predecessor or successor link to a project stored in a Web folder. Microsoft Project does not support external links that use the HTTP or FTP protocols.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:
  • Move the external project from the Web folder to a location on your hard disk or to a shared folder on your network.
  • Instead of the Web folder path, use a valid drive letter and directory path, or use a valid Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path (\\Server\Share) that points to the same location as the Web folder or FTP folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
