SUMMARY

When you configure and enable remote access using the Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access option, five choices appear through the wizard. The wizard configures your computer based on your selection, and may change the following items:
  • Port filters
  • Number of available Virtual Private Networking (VPN) interfaces
  • Router properties (local area network (LAN) routing only and/or LAN and demand-dial routing)
  • Remote Access Server
  • Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) or Network Address Translation (NAT)

The following list contains a short description of each wizard option.

Wizard Option

  • Filter: Filters block network traffic based on the port or protocol.
  • Router: Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) supports LAN routing and demand-dial routing.
  • Remote Access Server: Allows client VPN and dial-up connections.
  • VPN ports: Number of interfaces available for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) clients.

Internet Connection Server

  • Filters: None.
  • Router: LAN routing only. Demand-dial routing is turned on if you select the option to create a new demand-dial interface rather than selecting an Internet network adapter.
  • Remote Access Server: Disabled with NAT, enabled with Internet Connection Sharing.
  • VPN ports: None. The server does not accept VPN connections.

Remote Access Server

  • Filters: None.
  • Router: Disabled.
  • Remote Access Server: Enabled.
  • VPN ports: There are five PPTP connections, and five L2TP connections.

VPN Server

  • Filters: Filters for PPTP and L2TP/IPSec for input and output are created on the interface specified as the external network adapter during the wizard. All other traffic is dropped from this external interface.
  • Router: LAN and demand-dial routing.
  • Remote Access Server: Enabled.
  • VPN ports: There are 128 PPTP connections, and 128 L2TP connections.

Network Router

  • Filters: None.
  • Router: LAN routing only.
  • Remote Access Server: Disabled.
  • VPN ports: None. The server does not accept VPN connections.

Manually Configured Server

  • Filters: None.
  • Router: LAN and demand-dial routing.
  • Remote Access Server: Enabled.
  • VPN ports: There are five PPTP connections, and five L2TP connections.
