SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to administer Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) Mail services on a Windows 2000 Server-based computer that has been upgraded from Windows NT Server 4.0, you may receive the following error message:
SMTP Configuration
The service has an incompatible version number. You will not be able to configure the service.
Also, the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) may close without any warning.

The MMC version 1.2 in Windows 2000 allows you to add the MCIS snap-ins and configure the Mail services, but when you click Apply, the above symptoms occur.

CAUSE

MCIS and its snap-ins are not supported on Windows 2000.

WORKAROUND

If you have upgraded an existing Windows NT Server 4.0-based computer running MCIS to Windows 2000 Server, you can administer the MCIS services from a remote Windows NT Server 4.0 computer that has MCIS installed.
