The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Macintosh
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q256295

SYMPTOMS

When you open a presentation, you may receive the following error message
The movie file movie_name cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly.
where movie_name is the name of the movie that you inserted into the presentation.

CAUSE

When you insert a movie into a slide, Microsoft PowerPoint actually creates a link to the original movie file. For example, if you insert a QuickTime movie into a PowerPoint 98 or 2001 presentation, PowerPoint uses the QuickTime Extension to play the movie.

The error message occurs for one of the following reasons:
  • You copied the presentation to another computer but you did not copy the movie files.

    -or-

  • You copied all the files, but PowerPoint cannot find the movie files. This occurs when the path to the movie file is different on the Macintosh on which you copied the presentation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem in Office 2001, please download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file from the following Microsoft Web site: To temporarily work around this problem, when you copy your presentation from one Macintosh to another, be sure to copy all the movie files, as well. To make sure that the destination computer can play your movie files, follow these steps:
  1. Open the PowerPoint file on the destination computer.
  2. For each movie object, follow these steps:
    1. Delete the movie.
    2. Reinsert the movie.
  3. Save the presentation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Service Release 1.
