OL2000: (CW) Digital Dashboard Samples Folder Becomes the Default Information Store (256264)

NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

SYMPTOMS

When you reconfigure mail support from Corporate or Workgroup (CW) to Internet Mail Only (IMO), the Samples.pst file from the Microsoft Digital Dashboard Starter Kit may become your default mail store.

Folders are added to the Samples.pst file for the information store. These folders include Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, Journal, Tasks, and Sent Items. You cannot delete these folders.

RESOLUTION

You must prevent the problem before it happens. If you plan to reconfigure mail support from Corporate or Workgroup (CW) to Internet Mail Only (IMO), you must follow the procedures in this section:
  • Remove the Digital Dashboard from your Outlook profile.
  • Add a personal folder file (.pst) to your Outlook profile.
  • Rename the Samples.pst file.
  • Reconfigure mail support.
  • Open the Samples.old file.

Remove the Digital Dashboard from Your Outlook Profile

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mail (or Mail and Fax) icon. This displays your Outlook profile.
  3. Click Digital Dashboard, click Remove, and then click OK.

Add a Personal Folder File to Your Outlook Profile

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mail (or Mail and Fax) icon. This displays your Outlook profile.
  3. Click Add, click Personal Folders, and then click OK.
  4. Note the existing personal folder file, or name a new personal folder file, and then click Open.
  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  6. Quit Outlook.

Rename the Samples.pst File

  1. Click the Start button, point to Find (or Search), and then click Files and Folders.
  2. Search for the Samples.pst file.
  3. Right-click the Samples.pst file, and then click Rename.
  4. Change the .pst file name extension to ".old" (without the quotation marks).
For more information about searching for a file or folder, click the Start button, click Help, and then click the Search tab. Type search, and then click the Search for a file or folder topic in the list.

Reconfigure Mail Support

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Mail Services tab, click Reconfigure Mail Support.
  4. Click Internet Mail Only, and then click Next.
When you start Outlook, it starts in the Internet Mail Only mode.

WORKAROUND

If this problem has already occurred, you must follow the procedures in this section:
  • Add a new personal folder file.
  • Make the new personal folder file the default mail store.
  • Remove the Digital Dashboard personal folder file.
  • Remove the Digital Dashboard Starter Kit.
  • Reinstall the Digital Dashboard Starter Kit.

Add a New Personal Folder File

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Personal Folders (PST).
  3. In the Create Personal Folders dialog box, type a name for your new personal folder file, and then click Create.
  4. Click OK to accept the default file settings.

Make the New Personal Folder File the Default Mail Store

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the View menu, click Folder List.
  3. In the Folder List pane, right-click Personal Folders, and then click Properties.
  4. At the bottom of the Properties dialog box, click to select the Deliver POP mail to this Personal Folder check box, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Exit and Log Off.
When you restart Outlook, mail is delivered to your new personal folder file.

Remove the Digital Dashboard Personal Folder File

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the View menu, click Folder List.
  3. In the Folder List pane, right-click Digital Dashboard, and then click Close Digital Dashboard.
  4. On the File menu, click Exit and Log Off.

Remove the Digital Dashboard Starter Kit

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Digital Dashboard Starter Kit, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. When you are asked if you want to remove the program, click Yes.
  5. Close Control Panel.

Reinstall the Digital Dashboard Starter Kit

  1. Click Start, point to Find (or Search), and then click Files and Folders.
  2. Search for the Digidash.exe file.
  3. Double-click the Digidash.exe file to install the Digital Dashboard Starter Kit.
  4. Follow the instructions in the wizard, and then close Control Panel.
  5. Start Outlook.
