PUB2000 Error Message: Publisher Cannot Translate This File (256188)

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to insert a Windows Write (.wri) file into a text field in Microsoft Publisher 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Publisher cannot translate this file.

Publisher's file converters cannot translate this file. Make sure the file you're importing is in a format Publisher can recognize. For information on file formats, press F1 now.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You insert the text file by clicking Text File on the Insert menu.
  • You click Windows Write in the Files of Type box in the Insert Text dialog box.
  • You are running Publisher 2000 on a Microsoft Windows 95 or a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this issue from occurring, click All Text Formats in the Files of Type box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Publisher 2000.
