SYMPTOMS

A member of the DNSADMINS group may not be able to view any of the zone information on a given DNS server. When a member of this group attempts to add a zone, the following error message is displayed:
Mmc.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created.
A Dr. Watson log and user dump file are generated that show an access violation in Dnsmgr.dll.

In addition, if you attempt to connect to the DNS server remotely by using the DNS Manager snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC), the following error message is returned:
Access was denied. Would you like to add it anyway?
This problem can occur under the following circumstances:
  • The user who is attempting to view the configured DNS zones in the DNS Manager snap-in is a member of the DNSADMINS group.
  • Permissions have been modified on the DNS server from Full Control to Read for the DNSADMINS group.
  • The logged-on user has not been granted Full Control permissions individually or through another group.
