SYMPTOMS

Word stops responding when an out-of-process application uses a Visual Basic (VB) OLE control (OCX) on a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) form in Word to communicate with the application through a dynamic data exchange (DDE) link.

CAUSE

Word is sending a RETRYLATER message to the control, when it should be sending an ISHANDLED message.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2.
