Outlook Express Starts Remote Access When HTML Message Is Selected (255926)

SYMPTOMS

After you download messages in Outlook Express and disconnect, if you select a message containing HTML (in any folder), Outlook Express may start Apple Remote Access again, which establishes a connection, and then stops the computer. When this occurs, you must manually restart the computer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if an Outlook Express schedule is set to disconnect after sending and receiving messages and the Remote Access Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications option is enabled. When you select an HTML message, the software presumes that a TCP/IP connection is necessary and tries to establish a connection.

WORKAROUND

Use the following steps to disable the automatic connection option in Remote Access:

On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and then click Remote Access.
Click Options.
Click to clear the Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications check box.
Click OK, close the Remote Access window, and then click Save to save the changes.

A live Internet connection is not necessary to view e-mail messages that contain HTML content; disabling the automatic connection option in Remote Access prevents the selection of HTML messages in Outlook Express from invoking the dialer. Send/receive schedules continue to automatically invoke the dial-up process when they are run. However, with the automatic connection option disabled in Remote Access, starting Microsoft Internet Explorer does not automatically start the dialer. You must start Remote Access manually before browsing the Internet.
