SUMMARY

Personalized Menus organizes the Start menu (Programs and Favorites) or the Microsoft Internet Explorer Favorites menu to reflect how you use these menus. When Personalized Menus is turned on, Windows keeps track of which items you access from the Start menu or the Internet Explorer Favorites menu, hiding the items you have not accessed recently while keeping all of your items easily accessible. This article describes how Personalized Menus works in the Windows shell and Internet Explorer.

Personalized Menus is enabled by default for both the Start menu and the Internet Explorer Favorites menu. You may need to use your computer for several weeks before unused menu items are demoted (hidden). After an item is demoted, it is no longer displayed when you open the menu. To gain access to a demoted item, click ">>" at the bottom of the menu to expand the entire menu. Demoted items are displayed in a lighter color when the entire menu is expanded.

NOTE: The Use Personalized Menus check box in Taskbar and Start Menu properties does not control the Favorites menu in Internet Explorer, and the Enable Personalized Favorites Menu option on the Advanced tab of Internet Options does not control the Start menu (including Favorites on the Start menu). For example, the Favorites menu is still personalized in Internet Explorer after you click to clear the Use Personalized Menus check box in Taskbar and Start Menu properties.
