This article was previously published under Q255620

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the scroll bars to scroll through a Web page that contains a Netscape plug-in, a "General Protection Fault" error message may occur and the Web content may be displayed outside of the Internet Explorer window.

CAUSE

Internet Explorer makes a function call to the User module (a Microsoft Windows system component), which in turn calls into the GDI module (also part of the Microsoft Windows system) and passes parameters. GDI does not handle this call correctly, causing the coordinate system to become invalid for the window being used to view the content. When the operating system draws the content, it may be drawn outside the Internet Explorer window.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade to Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 in Windows 95.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows 95.
