SYMPTOMS

When you run the Network Identification Wizard prior to logon, your computer may silently restart or you may receive an "access violation" error message in Svchost.exe.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of stack corruption.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: To view the version, right-click the file in Windows Explorer, click Properties, and then click the Version tab.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.

The Network Identification Wizard lets you create an account or make a Remote Access Service (RAS) connection before you log on to Windows 2000. To start the Network Identification Wizard before you log on, set the following registry entry.
