  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q255554

SYMPTOMS

When you click a file that is shared on a remote computer, the window in which you are viewing the file list may seem to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions exist:
  • The file you selected is encrypted.
  • You are not the user who encrypted the file, or a designated recovery agent.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem from occurring, decrypt the files in folders you have shared on the network.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The window that seems to hang during this process eventually becomes responsive again. If you select another file that is encrypted, the window seems to hang again. The hang can last from one second to several minutes, depending on the size of the encrypted file and the speed or workload of the remote server.
