Windows 2000 Is Unable to Read Factory-Formatted Zip Cartridges in Floppy Mode (255527)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
This article was previously published under Q255527 SYMPTOMS
When you insert a Zip cartridge into the drive, Windows 2000 is unable to mount or read the volume, and the drive is shown as being unallocated in the Disk Management snap-in.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when both of the following conditions exist:
- The Zip cartridge came preformatted from the factory.
- The Zip drive is operating in floppy mode.
NOTE: This problem occurs only when both of the above conditions are met. If the drive is not in floppy mode, or if the cartridge has been previously formatted by Windows 2000, the problem does not occur.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, take the Zip drive out of floppy mode. If you do not need the data on these cartridges and plan to reformat them, you can place the drive back into floppy mode once you have finished reformatting the cartridges. For information on how to configure your drive in this mode, please consult the documentation for the drive.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
