XWEB: Computer Hangs When You Create Multiple Instances of an Appointment with OWA (255401)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 to create multiple instances of the same recurring appointment with Outlook Web Access (OWA), Microsoft Outlook 98 and Microsoft Outlook 2000 may stop responding (hang) if three or more of these instances of the appointment occur on the same day.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Microsoft Outlook 2000 and Outlook 98 behave differently when this problem occurs. The Outlook 2000 client hangs when you attempt to open the calendar. In Outlook 98, the calendar opens, but Outlook 98 hangs when you try to view the day with three or more instances of the appointment.

When only two instances of the appointment occur on the same day, Outlook may or may not display both instances of the appointment. Outlook does display both items as long as Outlook does not make any changes to either occurrence of the appointment. If Outlook makes a change to the appointment, the non-exception instance of the appointment disappears (or the instance of the appointment that appears earliest disappears).

The OWA client continues to work correctly, and you can view all instances of the appointment in the calendar.

Also, Outlook may not display appointments correctly if you change the time zone by following these steps:
  1. Create a recurring appointment in Outlook.
  2. Change the time zone in the calendar, for example, from Pacific time to Mid-Atlantic (GMT -2:00) time.
  3. Change the time for the second recurring appointment by moving it back 12 hours (to 2:00 A.M.).
  4. Change the time zone back to Pacific time.
Outlook displays the exception only on the first day and not the first occurrence of the appointment. The OWA client displays the first and second appointments correctly.
