Files That Are Recalled from Remote Storage Services Are Re-migrated to Offline Storage (255164)

SYMPTOMS

Files that are recalled from Remote Storage Services (RSS) may be moved back into offline storage when the next RSS job runs. For example, a user recalls the Mydocument.doc file from secondary storage, and then reads the document. The next day, a user opens up the same document and RSS recalls the file from offline storage again even though the migration criteria, not accessed in X number of days, has not been met.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the recalled file has been read but not modified. If the disk space on the Remote Storage managed volume is below the desired free space setting, the file is truncated again because it was not modified. However, if the free space is above the RSS threshold, the file remains in a pre-migrated state.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

A pre-migrated file is one that has been copied to offline storage but not yet truncated, data still resides locally on the volume. RSS does not create another copy of the file on the storage media. It will be linked to the version of the file on the media which it used for the original recall.

When a recalled file is modified, the changes are written to disk, it is no longer considered a pre-migrated file, and the file criteria counts start over at 0.
