AutoDial Does Not Remember Password or Connect Automatically (255070)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98 to Microsoft Windows 2000, AutoDial may not remember the password or connect automatically.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, set up a new dial-up connection and click Never dial a connection during setup.

When you use Windows 98 or Windows 95 with Internet Explorer 5, you may experience the same behavior with the AutoDial feature. Do the following to resolve the behavior:

  1. In Internet Explorer 5, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Connections tab, and then click Never dial a connection.
  3. Click OK.
When you want Internet access, connect by using the Microsoft Network desktop icon or the icon for your Internet service provider (ISP), and then start Internet Explorer.

Your Microsoft Exchange service provider or other service provider may also try to use the AutoDial feature when it is enabled.

After you follow the steps above, Internet Explorer does not attempt to automatically dial your ISP and Winsock programs do not attempt to automatically dial a connection.

This issue can also occur when you configure Internet Explorer to connect to the Internet by using a dial-up connection and you configure Microsoft Outlook Express to connect to the Internet by using a local area network (LAN). When you start Outlook Express you may be prompted to connect by using the dial-up connection. If you click Cancel, Outlook Express uses the LAN to connect.
