SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Outlook Express to connect to the Hotmail server, you may not be able to connect and you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click the Details button, the following error message may be displayed:

MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in module Msoe.dll at address

Then Outlook Express closes out.

Removing and re-creating the Hotmail account in Outlook Express took care of this error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can be due to changed properties on the Hotmail account. However, an intermittent problem usually turns out to be a connectivity or Hotmail server issue.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, delete the Hotmail account and then recreate it in Outlook Express.

MORE INFORMATION

More advanced troubleshooting involves performing one of the the following tasks:

  • Enabling Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) logging

    OR

  • Identifying the point where Outlook Express fails to retrieve mail from the Hotmail server.
