SYMPTOMS

When you click the File menu in Visio, you may receive the following Illegal Operation error message:
Visio32 caused a stack fault in User32.DLL.

RESOLUTION

This error occurs if you enable the Hfmenu option in a program called HotFax by Smith Micro. Hfmenu adds a Fax command to the File menu in Visio and other Windows-based programs.

According to Smith Micro Technical Support, you can resolve the error by disabling the Hfmenu option of the HotFax program. Disabling Hfmenu removes the Fax menu from other programs' File menus.

To disable the Hfmenu option in Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98:
  1. Press ALT+CTRL+DEL to open the Close Program dialog box.
  2. In the list of programs, click Hfmenu, and then click End Task.
To disable the Hfmenu option in Microsoft Windows NT:
  1. Press ALT+CTRL+DEL, and, in the window that appears, click Task List to open Windows NT Task Manager.
  2. In Windows NT Task Manager, click the Applications tab.
  3. In the list of programs, click Hfmenu, and then click End Task.
NOTE: This procedure explains how to turn off Hfmenu for the current Windows session. For instructions on how to permanently remove the Fax command from the Visio File menu, refer to your HotFax documentation, or contact Smith Micro at the following Web address: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support.
