SUMMARY

There may be situations when you need to move a Small Business Server (SBS) client computer out of the SBS domain and into another Windows NT domain, peer-to-peer network, or stand-alone environment. Some of SBS client software functions only when it is connected to an SBS server. Other SBS client software is licensed for use only when connecting to an SBS server. You should remove these components from the client computer prior to disconnecting it from the SBS network to ensure proper functionality.

MORE INFORMATION

The following client programs are intrinsic to an SBS network.

NOTE: These programs are either unable to function outside of the SBS local area network (LAN), or licensing does not allow for their use outside of the SBS network.
  • Modem Sharing Client
  • Fax Sharing Client
To remove these programs, please see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

In addition, to allow for proper connectivity to a new network, you need to change or reset other network settings so you can use the client computer in a new networking environment. Determine the protocols you want to use in the new network and install/configure them as appropriate.

Reset Internet Connectivity

For Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options/Settings.
  2. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
  3. If you know the name and port of a proxy server for the new network, type this information in the Address and Port boxes.
  4. If you do not know the name of the new proxy server or if you are not using a proxy server, click to clear the Use a proxy server check box, click OK, and then click OK again.
  5. Double-click the WSP Client icon.
  6. If you know the name of a proxy server for the new network, you can type it now. If you do not know the name of the new proxy server or you are not using a proxy server, click to clear the Enable WinSock Proxy Client check box, and then click OK.
  7. Restart the computer when you are prompted to do so.

  4. On the Configuration tab, you can remove Client for Microsoft Networks if this computer is not going to be part of a new Windows network or if it is not required to log on to a Windows network.
  5. If this computer is joining a new domain or workgroup, view the properties of the Client for Microsoft Networks.
  6. If you are logging on to a domain, make sure that option is selected.
  7. Fill in the Windows NT Domain field with the name of the new Windows NT domain you are joining, click OK, and then click OK.
