This article was previously published under Q254936 SYMPTOMS
When you install Windows Media Services, error messages may occur after most of the installation has taken place. The error messages occur when the installation attempts to register certain OCX files, such as Pubwiz.ocx, Uniwiz.ocx, and Multiwiz.ocx. This causes the Windows Media Services installation to fail.
CAUSE
The installation fails because the Comcat.dll file has been replaced at some point. In most cases, the Comcat.dll file version in <WINDIR>\System32 directory is version 5.00 and has a file size around 6 KB or 16 KB.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain a copy of an older version of the Comcat.dll file (version 4.71, 22 KB), and then perform the following steps:
- Create a backup copy of the existing version of the file from the <WINDIR>\System32 directory.
- Unregister the existing version of the Comcat.dll file as follows:
regsvr32 /u comcat.dll
- Copy the older version of the Comcat.dll file to the <WINDIR>\System32 directory.
- Register the older version as follows:
regsvr32 comcat.dll - Reinstall Windows Media Services.
