WD2000: Error Message When You Check Grammar of Text with German Punctuation (254789)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to check the grammar of text that contains punctuation formatted in German, you may receive an error message similar to one of the following:

Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me):

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in WINWORD.EXE at address.

NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINWORD.EXE

Exception: access violation ((oxc0000005), address:0x03d8a7e4)

Microsoft Windows 2000:

WINWORD has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

To view the error log in Microsoft Windows 2000, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
In the Search for files or folders named box, type Drwtsn32.log.
Click Search Now.
Right-click the file, and then click Open.

By default, the Drwtsn32.log file is located in the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\DrWatson

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

Background grammar checking is running.

-and-
There is an opening paired character (for example, a quotation mark, an opening parenthesis, or an opening square bracket) at the beginning of the sentence but no matching closing character later in the sentence.

-and-
The sentence ends with a colon, followed by a paragraph mark.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following.

Method 1: Turn Off the Grammar Rule

The grammar rule that causes this problem is Fehlendes Zeichen (Missing character). This is a rule that checks whether characters, such as quotation marks and parentheses, occur in pairs. To work around this problem, follow these steps to turn off this grammar rule:

On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Spelling & Grammar tab (Rechtschreibung und Grammatik), click Settings (Einstellungen).
Click to clear the Fehlendes Zeichen check box, and then click OK.

Method 2: Turn Off Background Grammar Checking

On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Spelling & Grammar tab (Rechtschreibung und Grammatik), click to clear the Check grammar as you type check box (Grammatik whrend der Eingabe berprfen) and then click OK.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).
