XADM: Anonymous Access Must Be Enabled to Send E-mail Notification (254758)

SYMPTOMS

After you create an e-mail notification, the designated mailbox may not receive the notification when the status of the monitored server or connector is changed to a notifying state (warning or critical state).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

To send the e-mail notification successfully, you need to turn on Anonymous Access for the default SMTP virtual server:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. In the left-hand pane, expand the server you intend to send notification from.
  3. Expand Protocols.
  4. Expand SMTP.
  5. Right-click the Default SMTP Virtual Server object, and then click Properties.
  6. On the Access tab, click Authentication.
  7. Click to select the Anonymous Access check box, and then click OK twice.
If you set the logging level for the SMTP protocol to Maximum, the following event is logged in the application log:

Event ID : 1709
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MsExchangeTransport
Event Category: SMTP Protocol
Description:
An SMTP client didn't authenticate before attempting to send mail. Access was denied.
