Visio5: "Unhandled Exception" or "Visio's Add-on Services Encountered an Error" When You Save or Open a Database Model (254749)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio Enterprise 5.0

This article was previously published under Q254749

SYMPTOMS

In Visio Enterprise, when you try to save a database model, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Unhandled Exception.

Unspecified Error.
If you then close the file and try to open it again, you receive the following error message:
Visio's add-on services encountered an error. You can continue running Visio. Click OK to continue.
After you get these error messages, you can no longer view or modify shape properties or use the Database menu commands.

CAUSE

These errors occur if you delete a partially connected relationship line (a line with one endpoint connected and the other not connected to a table/entity shape). After you receive the errors, there is no way to recover the file.

RESOLUTION

To prevent these problems, download and install ENT5DB2.exe. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

MORE INFORMATION

If you cannot download and install the update, you can still avoid the problem. When you need to delete a relationship line that is connected on only one end, disconnect the line before you delete it. You disconnect a line by dragging it away from the shape.

NOTE:If a relationship line is connected on both ends, you do not need to disconnect it before deleting it.

Microsoft also recommends that you create a backup of the database model file in a secure location and save the file frequently.
