Visio5: Visio 5.0 Setup Deletes the Windows 95 Ctl3d32.dll File (254544)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Visio 5.0 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95, the Setup program might delete Ctl3d32.dll, a shared system file. You might not know that this has happened until you try to start another program that requires the file to run.

This problem occurs under the following conditions:

The operating system is Windows 95. Installations on Windows NT 4.0 are not affected.
The version of Ctl3d32.dll present on the system is 2.31.000. Visio Setup detects and deletes only this version.

RESOLUTION

If you encounter this problem while trying to run a program that requires the Ctl3d32.dll file, you must restore the file to the Windows\System folder. If one of your co-workers uses the program that requires the file, you can copy the file from his or her computer to your own. You can also find the original file on that program's installation disks or CD.

To avoid the problem completely, copy the Ctl3d32.dll file to another location on your computer before you install Visio 5.0. After the Visio installation is finished, copy the file to the Windows\System folder again.

Ctl3d32.dll is a 32-bit system file that some applications use to give buttons, other controls in dialog boxes, and other parts of the program's user interface a 3-D appearance. Visio 5.0 products do not require or use this file; however, other Windows-based programs require it.

This problem occurs most frequently with Novell Client32 and IntranetWare for Netware networks with Windows 95 workstations. These two Novell applications install and require the same version of Ctl3d32.dll that the Visio 5.0 Setup program removes. After Visio Setup removes this file, you cannot load the Client32 application and log on to the NetWare network. This usually occurs the first time that you restart your computer after you install Visio 5.0.
