The filter daemon stops before completely filtering all documents (254503)

SYMPTOMS

When you catalog documents using Site Server Search, the filter daemon (Fltrdmn.exe) may stop prior to completely filtering all documents.

CAUSE

If the filter daemon consumes more memory than indicated by HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Siteserver\3.0\Search\Gathering Manager\Filterprocessmemoryquota registry key, then the gatherer process stops the filter process. The default value of this registry key is 25 MB, which should be sufficient to filter any normal document.

This is by design.

RESOLUTION

The long term resolution for this problem is to trace the problem to a specific file, which may be corrupted, and then remove the file, or if the problem is caused by a memory leak in a particular filter, contact the provider of the file filter for an update or fix.

WORKAROUND

Increase the value of the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\siteserver\3.0\search\gatheringmanager\filterprocessmemoryquota



Note The value is in bytes.

MORE INFORMATION

Usually this problem is caused by corrupted files or a memory leak in the filter used for the file. This causes the filter process to use a large amount of memory which could, if not stopped by the gather service, use all available memory on the computer.
