Updating a Protocol Virtual Server's (Unknown) State (254327)

SYMPTOMS

When you create a new virtual server, the server may display an (unknown) state, and the option to start the server may be unavailable.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, update the server's status and enable the restart option, and then restart System Manager.

Exchange Server 2000 provides virtual servers for the following protocols:

  • Hypertext Transfer Protocol/Web Distributing Authoring and Versioning (HTTP/WebDAV)
  • Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4)
  • Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP)
  • Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3)
  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
The process for updating the virtual server's state is different for newly created servers than for existing servers. A new server's status is updated when the new configuration data created in Active Directory is replicated to the metabase.

To check whether the update process is complete, click 'Refresh' on the toolbar. The length of time it takes to replicate the data varies, depending on the system topology.
