FIX: Problems Encountered by the MSMQ Migration Tool (254295)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Message Queuing 2.0

This article was previously published under Q254295

SYMPTOMS

The Message Queuing (MSMQ) migration tool may encounter problems under the following migration scenarios:
  • The migration tool may fail in a multidomain environment due to replication problems, or if the domain controller (DC) for a domain is not available.
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Servers with nonstandard characters in their names are not migrated into the MSMQ Directory Service (DS).
  • MSMQ Sites with spaces in their names are not migrated into the DS.
  • Migration of the MSMQ Enterprise may fail on localized versions of Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000 if the log file for the migration is given a non-English name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

260910 How to Obtain the Latest Windows 2000 Service Pack

These problems are addressed in Service Pack 1 for Windows 2000 in the following ways:
  • In the case of failure in a multidomain environment, the migration tool logs the error and continues with the migration process. You can rerun the tool at a later time to correct these errors, when a domain controller is online, or when the replication interval has passed.
  • When the migration tool encounters a computer with nonstandard characters in its name, the tool issues a warning.
  • Sites with nonstandard characters in their names are renamed during migration to allow compatibility with the DS.
  • The migration tool has been updated to allow non-English names for the migration log file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
