Windows 95 Logo Displayed When You Start Windows 98 (254268)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98, you may still see the "Starting Windows 95" message when you start your computer, and the Windows 95 logo may be displayed even though there is no Logo.sys file in the root folder.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Windows 95 version of the Io.sys file is not properly replaced with the Windows 98 version during the upgrade process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restart the computer with the Windows 98 Startup disk, and then type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command.

NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you back up the Msdos.sys file before you transfer the system files. The Msdos.sys file contains basic information about the location of the Windows folder and startup files, and other options.

attrib c:\msdos.sys -s -h -r
copy c:\msdos.sys c:\msdos.xxx
attrib c:\msdos.sys +s +h +r
sys c:
