Cannot Communicate with Some Computers on Network When Using Autodetect to Configure IPX Frame Type (254113)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the autodetect feature to configure the Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) frame type, you may not be able to communicate with some computers on your network.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when multiple frame types are in use on your network. The autodetect feature is limited to detecting a single frame type.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, manually configure the frame type and network number for each frame type in use on your network.

MORE INFORMATION

The IPX autodetect feature sends a Routing Information Protocol (RIP) request over a frame type and waits for a response. If it receives no response, it sends the request over another frame type, continuing until it receives a response. When it receives a response, it stops sending requests to the other frame types and selects the first one to reply as the default frame type.
