Basic Troubleshooting

Check the basic ADC process:

1. Is the Active Directory Connector service running?
2. Is a Connection Agreement configured for the Exchange Server computer to the Active Directory server?
3. Is the container to which you want your entry replicated displayed in the Export Containers list, or under any of the containers that are displayed in the Export Containers list?
4. Is the Exchange Server computer turned on and running? Is the Exchange Server directory service running on the server?
5. Is the Active Directory server turned on and running?
6. In the Connection Agreement properties, did you select the object class that you are trying to replicate on both the From Windows and From Exchange tabs?
7. In the Connection Agreement properties, did you select the directions that you want to replicate information to and from on the General tab? (You can select one-way or two-way replication. During one-way replication, directory information is replicated either from Exchange to Windows 2000 Server or from Windows 2000 Server to Exchange. During two-way replication, directory information is replicated to and from both directories.)
8. Do the credentials that you are using on the target directory have sufficient permissions to create or modify objects?
9. Are any error messages logged in the Applications folder of the Event log (for example, messages that indicate incorrect credentials, a server down, or a local error)?

If all of the preceding settings are configured properly, check the following scenarios, as applicable, to determine why an entry is not replicating.

Object Does Not Replicate from Exchange to Active Directory

The following list contains scenarios in which an object does not replicate from Exchange to Windows 2000 Server:

• Exchange object A matches an Active Directory object B, but object B was deleted.
• Exchange object A matches an Active Directory object B, but object B is not in a domain to which the ADC can write (for example, a different tree or domain in the same forest).
• The Connection Agreement is not an inter-organization Connection Agreement, and the ADC is matching a mailbox to a mail-enabled user. The ADC should match only to mailbox-enabled users.
• The Connection Agreement is not an inter-organization Connection Agreement, and the ADC is matching a custom recipient or a distribution list to a mailbox-enabled user.
• This server is not a bridgehead server for the Windows 2000 Server directory, and the object could not be matched. In this case, the Connection Agreement does not create the object. To change this, open the properties of the Connection Agreement, and click This is the primary Connection Agreement for the connected Windows Domain on the Advanced tab.

Object Does Not Replicate from Active Directory to Exchange

The following list contains scenarios in which an object does not replicate from Windows 2000 Server to Exchange:

• Active Directory object A matches an Exchange object B, but object B was deleted.
• The Active Directory object A matches an Exchange object B, but B is not in the same site as the Exchange Server 5.5 computer that is specified in the Connection Agreement.
• The Connection Agreement is not the primary Connection Agreement for this Exchange organization. In this case, the Connection Agreement does not create the object. To change this, open the Connection Agreement properties, and then click This is the primary Connection Agreement for the connected Exchange Organization on the Advanced tab.
• The object in Active Directory does not contain e-mail information. An object must contain at least one of the following attributes to replicate to Exchange: mail, legacyExchangeDN, textEncodedORAddress, proxyAddresses, or msExchHomeServerName. A group object may contain the mailNickname attribute, and users or contact objects may contain the targetAddress attribute.
