SideWinder Error Message: A Limitation Exists with Your Computer's Resources or Configuration (253769)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.02 or 3.0, you may receive one of the following error messages:
  • If you are running the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.02, you may receive the following error message:
    Error creating process <setup\_setup.exe>. Reason: the system cannot find the file specified.
  • If you are running the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.0, you may receive the following error message:
    A limitation exists with your computer's resources or configuration.

    Setup can't install SideWinder Game Controller software on your current operating system.

    Check your SideWinder Game Controller Software product packaging for system requirements.
In either case, when you click OK, Setup quits and you return to the desktop.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you attempt to install the SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.02 or 3.0 on a computer with Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

MORE INFORMATION

You can only install the SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.02 and 3.0 on a Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based computer.

Support for legacy SideWinder game port controllers are built into Windows 2000 and Windows XP. To install a SideWinder game port device on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, follow the steps below for your Windows version:

Windows 2000
  1. Connect your SideWinder game controller to the game port or USB port in your computer.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Gaming Options.
  4. Click Add.
  5. In the Game Controllers box, click Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect), and then click OK.
Windows XP
  1. Connect your SideWinder game controller to the game port or USB port in your computer.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Game Controllers.
  4. Click Add.
  5. In the Game Controllers box, click Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect), and then click OK.
