XCLN: Cannot Soft Delete Messages if You Exceed "Prohibit Send and Receive Limit" (253509)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q253509

SYMPTOMS

When you exceed the "Prohibit Send and Receive Limit" on your mailbox, you are not allowed to send or receive mail (expected behavior) and you are warned to reduce the size of your mailbox. Now you may delete mail from your Deleted Items folder ("hard delete," essentially a permanent deletion), but when you try to delete mail from any other folders ("soft delete," essentially move messages to the Deleted Items folder), you are not allowed to do so.

WORKAROUND

You can directly hard delete messages from any folder by clicking the message and then pressing the SHIFT+DELETE keys.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
