You can use System Monitor to create sequential performance logs of a specific size. This prevents logs from becoming too large and unmanageable and lets users organize the logs by number.

Creating Sequential Performance Logs- Expand Performance.
- Double-click Performance Logs and Alerts.
- Right-click Counter Logs, and then click New Log Setting.
- Type the name of the appropriate log.
- On the General tab, click Add to select the counter.
- Click the object, click the counter you want to monitor, and then click Add.
- On the Log Files tab, type the location of the performance log and the file name.
- Click to select the End file names with check box, and then click nnnnnn. If you click Date, your log file is overwritten if it reaches its maximum size in less than 24 hours.
- Type a starting number for your log in the Start Numbering At section.
- In the Log File Type section, click Binary File. You can type a comment if appropriate.
- In the Log File Limit section, click Limit of, and then type a reasonable size for your log file.
- On the Schedule tab, click When the log file is full in the Stop Log section (the maximum size of the log file should be displayed).
- Click to select the Start a new log file check box.
- To start logging, right-click the log name in the right pane of System Monitor and click Start (or click the Start button).
