Phone Book Administrator Not Installed with Connection Manager Administration Kit in Windows 2000 (253148)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) component using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, the Phone Book Administrator (PBA) that is used to create phone book files (.pbk) for use with the CMAK is not installed.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Phone Book Administrator is not installed as a part of the Windows 2000 Connection Manager Administration Kit component, and must be manually installed as a separate program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install PBA version 1.2 (6.0.702.0) as a separate program by running the Pbainst.exe program in the Valueadd\Msft\Mgmt\Pba folder on the original Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, the PBA is installed as a part of the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. PBA is a component of Connection Point Services, which is installed with CMAK when you select all subcomponents of the Internet Connection Services for RAS service in the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

In Windows 2000, the Connection Manager Administration Kit component is included with Windows 2000, but the Phone Book Administrator is not installed with the Connection Manager Administration Kit.

NOTE: The Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack cannot be installed on Windows 2000. Older versions of Phone Book Administrator will not run in Windows 2000. (This is also stated in the Readme.htm file also located in the \Valueadd\Msft\Mgmt\Pba folder on the original Windows 2000 CD-ROM.)

To start the Phone Book Administrator after you install it:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Phone Book Administrator.
