SUMMARY

In Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0 and 5.x, administrators can configure multiple mailboxes to use one common Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 user account. With the technology shift in Microsoft Windows 2000 and Active Directory, there is now a one-to-one relationship for the mail-enabled user and the account that it is associated with in Active Directory.

Customers who require that a single Active Directory user account be used for multiple mail-enabled users can achieve this using the following procedure:
  1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.
  2. On the View menu, click Advanced Features.
  3. Open the properties for the mail-enabled user.
  4. Click the Exchange Advanced tab, and then click the Mailbox Rights button.
  5. Add the user account you want, and give it the following permissions:
    • Read permissions
    • Full Mailbox Access
  6. Select the Security Tab, add the user account and give it the following permissions:
    • Receive as
    • Send as
The user may not be able to log on immediately, because of replication latency.
