In Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0 and 5.x, administrators can configure multiple mailboxes to use one common Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 user account. With the technology shift in Microsoft Windows 2000 and Active Directory, there is now a one-to-one relationship for the mail-enabled user and the account that it is associated with in Active Directory.
