Account Joiner Utility Hangs with Application Error Message on Startup (253006)

When you attempt to start the Account Joiner utility, it may stop responding (hang) with the following error message:
An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
accountJoiner.e.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address 0x1001b9b1
CAUSE
This error message can occur if you use brackets or parentheses in the management agent (MA) name. The Account Joiner utility considers brackets and
parentheses to be illegal characters.
RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next version of Microsoft Metadirectory Services that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. WORKAROUND
There is no workaround for this behavior. Microsoft does not recommend renaming the MA to avoid the problem characters.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in in Zoomit VIA 2.1 and Microsoft Metadirectory Service 2.1.
