This article was previously published under Q252716 SUMMARY
When you use Outlook, your ability to view file attachments to e-mail messages varies according to the format of the message. The sender of an e-mail message determines the format that is used when they compose the message.
Unlike Microsoft Outlook Express, in Outlook you cannot view attachments in the Preview Pane unless they are sent in either Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) or Microsoft Outlook Rich Text formatted messages. This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
To display attachments in the Preview Pane when you use Plain Text format, click the paperclip icon on the message bar at the top of the Preview Pane. This displays the name and size of the attachment.
To open the attachment, click the attachment file name, and the attachment opens in a new window.
