This article was previously published under Q252492

SYMPTOMS

If you open a document that contains a table that was numbered with the "Number Across Rows" feature in either Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows or Microsoft Word for Windows 95, and you save the file as Word 6.0/95 in Microsoft Word 2000, when you close and reopen the document, the numbering in the table changes to "Number Down Columns".

For example, instead of your table being numbered similar to the following:

Your table may now be numbered like the following.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

245025 OFF2000: How to Obtain and Install Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a)

Microsoft Word 2000 does not have the "Number Down Columns" or "Number Across Rows" option as do Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows and Microsoft Word for Windows 95. Instead, Word 2000 numbers each table cell once by default and does not repeat a number in any table cell.

To reapply the "Number Across Rows" format in your Word table, follow these steps:
  1. Select one row of your table. For example, do the following:
    1. Move your insertion point into any cell of the first row of your table.
    2. On the Table menu, point to Select and click Row.
  2. With the table row selected, click Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu.
  3. On the Numbered tab, click the number format you want, and then click OK.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for each table row. However, when you specify the type of numbering you want for the selected table row, click Restart numbering for each row other than the first row.
NOTE: If you resave your Word document as Word 6.0/95, the problem described in the "Symptoms" section of this article occurs again. If you save your Word 6.0/95 document as a Word document in Word 2000, Word 2000 retains the correct numbering in your Word table.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
