SUMMARY

When you are using Exchange System Manager, you may notice a mailbox for the SMTP service in the information store. This mailbox is displayed as:

SMTP (SERVERNAME-{Globally Unique Identifier})

For example, if your server is named EX2K, you may see:

SMTP (EX2K-{A9D63C8D-428A-A208-8A9A5E173D06})

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server uses this mailbox as a placeholder for the underlying Exchange 2000 transport subsystem to submit messages to the information store. That is, it is used whenever messages are sent through the information store either to a local mailbox or the server's message transfer agent (MTA).
