Cannot Eject DVD-ROM Drive That Supports MESN Feature (252206)

SYMPTOMS

The door or tray of a DVD-ROM drive that supports Media Event Status Notification (MESN) requests may not open when you press the Eject button while the "New Hardware Found" window is displayed. Because the computer is not responding as you expect, you may think that the computer has stopped responding (has hung). However, the keyboard and mouse still work correctly.

This behavior occurs after you click the Refresh button in Device Manager to update drivers for any unknown devices, or if you use the Add New Hardware Wizard to install drivers for unknown devices. When you click the Cancel button, the DVD-ROM drive ejects the disc.

This behavior occurs only on drives that support the MESN feature.

CAUSE

The MESN Eject request must run at "application time." However, the request cannot be completed because Configuration Manager is already running events at "application time" and its events are synchronous, blocking any new requests.

RESOLUTION

To avoid or work around this problem, use any of the following methods:

Use My Computer to eject the DVD-ROM. Right-click the drive that contains the DVD-ROM, and then click Eject. If My Computer is not visible on the screen, either right-click the taskbar and then click Minimize All, or start a new instance of Windows Explorer by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, and then clicking Windows Explorer.
Remove the disc from the DVD-ROM drive before you add new hardware that may require a different disc for installation.
Disable the Auto Insertion Notification option by clearing the check box in the DVD-ROM drive properties in Device Manager. You can enable this setting again after you install the new Plug and Play device.

This problem can occur with Toshiba SD-C2202 DVD-ROM drives, and all DVD-ROM drives that contain PC-99 compliant firmware that supports the Media Event Status Class (MESC) feature, which is also known as the Get Event Status Notification (GESN) feature.
