XADM: Progress Bar Is Inaccurate During the Initial Installation of Exchange 2000 Server in a Windows 2000 Domain (251520)

When you run Setup to install Microsoft Exchange 2000 without using the DomainPrep and ForestPrep options, the schema is extended during this initial installation. The following warning indicates that the schema must be updated:
Exchange Setup has determined that it must extend your Windows 2000 Directory Schema in order to continue installing Exchange into your Windows 2000 domain. This operation may take a considerable amount of time to complete.
During the setup process, you may notice that the progress indicator bars on the Component Progress window do not give a correct indication of setup progress. While Setup updates the schema, you should notice the following message:
Updating the Active Directory schema - file 1-10. This may take several minutes.
The file indicator progresses from 1 through 10, but the indicator bars move only slightly. This update may actually take much longer than several minutes.
WORKAROUND
The Setup command line options /ForestPrep and /DomainPrep should be used to better manage the time and impact of extending the schema.
STATUS
This behavior occurs because this update takes place only once within the entire domain. There is no reliable way to determine the amount of time needed to extend the schema because this process may occur on another server.
