Incorrect Characters Displayed in Progress Bar When Starting Windows 2000 (251302)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the English-language version of Windows 2000 on a computer that dual boots with a double-byte character set (DBCS) version of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, incorrect characters may be displayed on the initial progress bar when you start the computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because DBCS versions of Windows NT 4.0 use the Bootfont.bin file to display the correct characters in the "text" portion of Windows NT 4.0 startup. Because Windows 2000 replaces the Ntldr and Ntdetect.com files with the English versions, these files do not work with the Bootfont.bin file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the Bootfont.bin file in the root folder of the system partition.

NOTE: If you have a DBCS version of Windows 2000, you can replace the the English version of the Ntldr and Ntdetect.com files with the language specific files.
