If your MSDE installation fails and you are unable to determine the cause, or you find an error in the Setup program, the following log files might be useful for troubleshooting purposes:
  • The Sqlstp.log file, located in the \Windows or the \WinNT directory.

  • The Setup.log files, located in the \Windows or the \WinNT directory.

  • The Cnfgsvr.out file located in the \Install directory of the target program directory, which by default is \Mssql7\Install.
