PI2000 Err Msg: An Error Occurred in Starting the Catalog (250546)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Picture It! 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Cataloging Disabled
An error occurred in starting the catalog.
Cataloging functions will not be available.
You may also receive the following message in red text on the Get Picture menu:
Cataloging not available!

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Picture It! 2000 catalog file is damaged.

The catalog file (Artgal50.mmc) can be damaged if Picture It! 2000 is interrupted in the process of cataloging a large number of images.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Repair the Catalog File

  1. Quit Picture It! 2000.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Clip Gallery, and then click Microsoft Clip Gallery.
  3. Right-click any category or clip, and then click Recover.
  4. Click Compact.
  5. Quit Clip Gallery, and then start Picture It! 2000 to test if the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues to occur, skip to the "Restore a Backup Copy of the Catalog File" method.

Create a Backup Copy of the Catalog File

NOTE: Do not create a backup copy of the Artgal50.mmc file if you suspect that the file is damaged.

To create a backup copy of an undamaged Artgal50.mmc file:
  1. Quit Picture It! 2000 and Clip Gallery.
  2. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  3. In the Named box, type artgal50.mmc.
  4. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  5. In the list of found files, right-click the Artgal50.mmc file, and then click Copy.
  6. Copy the file to a backup device, a floppy disk, or a different folder or hard disk.

    NOTE: Because the size of the Artgal50.mmc file can vary, the Artgal50.mmc file may be too large to copy to a floppy disk.

    For more information about how to copy files in Microsoft Windows, click Start, and then click Help. On the Index tab, type copying, and then double-click the copying files, folders topic.

Restore a Backup Copy of the Catalog File

To restore a catalog file, you must have an undamaged backup copy of the Artgal50.mmc file.

NOTE: When you restore a backup copy of the catalog file, you lose all of the changes that you made to the catalog file since you created the backup copy.

To restore a backup copy of the Artgal50.mmc file:
  1. Quit Picture It! 2000 and Clip Gallery.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the appropriate line for your version and configuration of Microsoft Windows, and then click OK

    Microsoft Windows 95/98 with user profiles disabled:

    drive:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Catalog

    Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Windows 95/98 with user profiles enabled:

    drive:\Windows\Profiles\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Catalog

    where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed, and username is your user name on your computer or network.
  4. Right-click the Artgal50.mmc file, and then click Rename.
  5. Press END, type .old, and then press ENTER.
  6. Copy an undamaged backup copy of the Artgal50.mmc file to the Media Catalog folder.
  7. Start Picture It! 2000 to test if the issue is resolved.

Replace the Catalog File with a New Catalog File

NOTE: When you replace the Artgal50.mmc file, you lose all of the custom descriptions that you added to the catalog file.

If you do not have an undamaged backup copy of the Artgal50.mmc file, rename the file and create a new one:
  1. Quit Picture It! 2000 and Clip Gallery.
  2. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  3. In the Named box, type artgal50.mmc.
  4. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  5. In the list of found files, right-click the Artgal50.mmc file, and then click Rename.
  6. Press END, type .old, and then press ENTER.
  7. Start Picture It! 2000 or Clip Gallery.

    A new Artgal50.mmc file is created automatically.
